Today, I was starting a new job and I didn't want to be late, so I took a train that left earlier than normal, just to make sure I'd be on time. Turns out, the earlier train wasn't an express train, and made it to my stop 12 minutes after my usual one did. I was late for work. FML

What he meant was that if the train op usually took was just fine up untll now they should have taken that one again. However even then the comment was just stupid.

We have sprinters and intercities on our railways, always clearly labeled. If you didn't figure out the type of train that is probably poor information by the railways, you shouldn't have to look carefully, it should be clear.

Well, actually, this FML is from Japan (Saitama, to be specific). Having extensively experienced the rail systems in both Korea and Japan, I can say that the JR (Japan Railways) and the subways can be extraordinarily confusing, even when it *seems* clear-cut. (It's worth mentioning that the Korean railways are some of the most efficient in the world.) I can't say what the case is with OP, but it makes sense from my point of view.

I always wonder why people don't try to be 10 mins early on any day. Your train could be late or something, but imho you shouldn't blame your being late on the train then. Just like, when going by bus, you should always get the earlier bus, so if stuff goes wrong you'll still be on time. And that's not just your first day(s), but all of them. Imo that's what makes a responsible employee, but maybe that's just me being overly punctual.

The thing is, OP DID got on the earlier train, but what he didn't know was that the earlier train wasn't an express train. Since, I think, the usual train he took is an express train, it arrived at his stop faster than the earlier train.

Depends on the public transport and your shift times, I've had plenty of early shifts that I've been a few minutes late for because I've had to get the first bus of the day at 6:45am and it was late. I couldn't "just get an earlier bus" because the bus before that was 11pm the previous night. Plus it isn't always reasonable to be getting the earlier bus, my old job only had one bus an hour there and getting the earlier bus meant standing around outside for an hour because only the managers had keys to get into the building.

Ya, that's a good plan in theory, but a lot of extra work and not always possible. You're just overly punctual.

This may sound harsh but you deserve this one. Transportation is something that should have been checked (even gone on a practice run) for your first day on the job.

I've done practice runs for commutes before. What usually happens is that the practice run goes without a hitch and the actual commute is a nightmare.
