it's called knocking and waiting for a response. it's a courtesy you should give a child of any age.

You should also feel apologetic. Give the kid his space. Or $50 for a motel room. Or at the very least a "Do not disturb" sign.
There's a way to announce your arrival before possibly intruding. Is it possible for you to knock? Also, you own them both an apology for intruding.
