You big child

Today, my girlfriend of six years burst into tears and said yes repeatedly when I presented her with a ring. I then had to explain that it was a promise ring, not an engagement ring. She looked me in the eye and dumped me on the spot. Apparently, promise rings are for teenagers, not couples in their 30s. FML

I agree with her. Once you have graduated college you are too old to give someone a promise ring. By the time you are thirty you should be settled and really ready to start life, if not already. Her biological clock is ticking.

It took you six years to give a ring, but the ring was not an engagement ring? I would think that would piss off most women.

If you are not ready to get engaged, you should have, when you realized she thought it was an engagement ring, was go with the flow and become engaged, as it was very obvious she had been waiting for it for a long time.

I can understand why she would be disappointed. But for all the people saying she deserved commitment, she is allowed to propose to him. I don't understand how you can go from "I'm ready to spend the rest of my life with you." to "I never want to see you again." over the type of ring he presented.

Wow. Did you give her your letter jacket, too? Seriously, this was a high school move. If you guys had agreed to commitment without an actual marriage, that would be one thing; but that doesn't seem to be the case here. If you can't commit to the marriage that she was obviously expecting (and had likely already talked about), let her go. Give her the chance to find someone willing to make that commitment.

This has to be a joke, it HAS TO BE. A grown ass man in a 6yr relationship toying with his girlfriend with a “promise” ring?? Those aren’t even real!! At least once you’re out of middle school, jeez. Grow up, already!!

Yeah... YDI. 6 year relationship and a promise ring? I mean, you fucked up double if you've both already discussed marriage and you pulled this one on her. Either way, it looks like she was ready for marriage and you dropped the ball, big time.

Also even though this wasn't a proposal (Other than GF's proposal you pretty much need a new brain) I post this every time a REAL proposal gets totally FUCKED up:

Marriage isn't the surprise, the proposal time and location is. You and your partner should have already discussed this and are both actually ready for marriage before you propose.
