Today, my wife, in all seriousness, told me she believed I am autistic. With all due respect to autistic people out there, WTF? FML

There are many, many different types and gradations of autism out there. Mine, for example, is vastly different from my sister’s, leading to me being diagnosed at age 6 while she slipped under the radar until age 24. Not every autistic person is necessarily obvious. If your wife brought it up, it seems to be something that she’s been thinking over tot a while. Consider seeking out a psychiatrist to help you work out if she is right. Getting a professional opinion and seeking out resources if you do end up being autistic can only help you. And if she’s wrong, well, it can’t hurt to check, right?

The common societal "understanding" of autism is so far off the mark that people can get extremely wrong ideas from hearing that someone is Autistic, or that they might be. This could be you. Most of the "symptoms" listed in DSM-V are really just the symptoms of being traumatized by lack of accommodations. People who don't need those accommodations, or have found their own workarounds, don't present in those ways. The *experience* of being Autistic is nothing like the *appearance* of being Autistic.

She's just trying to be nice to you. You're probably a narcissist or a sociopath and there are no charitable organizations trying to cure those motherfuckers.

I've come to the same conclusion about my wife. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Mild autism can actually really help your organizational skills 😄 I can make jokes, I have a wife and 2 kids with ASD 😄

You could do a quick check of the Autistic experiences listed here: blimix.com/autistic/

Thanks for saying this. I knew there was massive misunderstanding of autism, even in the medical field, but I didn’t realize the lack of proper clinical symptoms in the DSM.

maybe you are, maybe you aren't you could get yourself checked if you're interested to learn about yourself, either way. but one thing is sure: the fact that you are insulted by the suggestion indicates that you're not that great a person.
