What is wrong with you?

Today, our dog is a racist. No other way to say it. We’ve had her since she was born, raised her just like our other dogs, but every time we try to take her for a walk, if she spots a black person, any black person, she barks at them, and once almost bit someone. We don’t know what to do. FML

I feel ya. I had an ex pub guard dog Rottweiler who'd been kicked by a black guy when he was young... Walking him was a racially nervy thing. We managed to get it sorted when we got talking to a couple of guys in our local pub and they agreed to help with a big bag of treats and lots of attention. The Rotty was always a bit wary after that but was definitely eyeing people up for treats rather than all out aggression. Some times it's as simple as the dog not being comfortable because they've never been exposed to the rainbow of human shades and don't understand that it doesn't matter. You have to teach them, a pocket full of treats and honesty with people at your local dog park will find you a few who are willing to teach her that whether the hand is black, white, pink or green the treats are just as good. Positive reinforcement is The Way.

Look deeply into yourselves. Dogs get signs you miss. Do you get stressed or scared around people with darker skin color?

Not necessarily, one of my Nanna’s (3) dogs is the same. The second he sees anyone who isn’t white he gets aggressive.

Some of my closest friends are brown and black, yet my dog, for some reason growls at every black person on television and gets nervous around black people she doesn’t recognize. I haven’t a clue where she got this from. But she also barks at people who are bundled up for winter with big hats on for the first few months it gets cold out, every year. Sometimes you just don’t know where they get it from.

Is it possible someone of colour hurt her in the few weeks before you got her? My friends dog hated anyone without an English accent because in quarantine he was bullied

One of my first jobs was as a security officer, and the uniform was all black. My own dog and cat both, whom I personally raised from puppy/kittenhood, would freak out when they saw me in uniform. Both reacted with anxiety and aggression and didn't want near me until I'd changed clothes, even though they had to know it was still me. There is something about the dark contrasting figure, especially against the brightness of daylight, that makes some otherwise socialized animals nervous. It's probably the same reason some dogs seem antagonistic against UPS delivery guys. I'm sure it has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the visual contrast triggering something in the brain.
