Today, it's been months since I graduated university. I still haven't managed to land a single interview. Meanwhile my brother recently woke up from a week long bender, realized he had no money for weed, went out, and 4 days later landed a well paid sales job 15 minutes from home. FML

He probably made a holocaust joke and made the boss laugh.

His motivation was weed. What is yours? Find it. Also, your bro has got game.

A huge thing in getting a job is being yourself. I work for a semiconductor manufacturing company and got this job NOT because I had experience (I didn't) but because I went into it honest about what I like and don't like in a job, honest about myself and showed express interest in the field (I am a tech junkie). They were impressed not with my five years of management experience at my prior job but with the seven years of podcasting I had done since before I'd graduated high school and being dedicated to it despite never earning a penny (at that point, anyways) and having few fans when I started. You aren't selling what you did for your former employers, you're selling what you can do for them as your future employer. Good luck, OP!

So, so true. Be yourself, be honest and be RELAXED. I can't count how many people I passed on in the past for taking themselves far too seriously. Don't be afraid to joke around, as long as it is in good taste, either!

The big difference here is he was looking for any job, you're probably looking for ones in your field. Of course he's going to get one first if he's more willing to take anything.

Many times people don't get certain jobs based on how they portray in their interviews or don't have enough experiences. I usually tell people to have a job/internship/ or volunteer while they're in college even if you do it a couple times a week or so because this is what they're looking for. You shouldn't have high expectations after graduating college.. Take your time by first noticing your errors and fixing them.

If his only motivation for finding work was to be able to buy more weed, I can't imagine him being the best employee. Not finding a job yet doesn't mean there's something wrong with you. My brother was looking for 2 years before he got a decent job. I remember him telling me he felt like a failure because "all" his friends kept posting about their amazing lives on Facebook while he was stuck working a minimum wage retail job, but they weren't all doing better than he was. Lots of people struggle. You just don't hear about it as much because people who are struggling don't brag about it on social media. I know it sucks, but you're not alone in this.

Instead of berating him why not ask him for pointers?
