Today, I went to a birthday party for my friend's daughter. I picked up a gift for the girl and another for her parents. I got the mother a cute little garden stone that read "What our children see in the world depends on what we show them." Later, I found out her daughter is blind. FML

I'm assuming that you didn't know her well enough to know she had a blind daughter... that plus the fact that the message is clearly figurative should get you off the hook loll just don't make a big scene about it with her and you should be fine :)

Personally, I find the phrase to be even more relevant when the daughter is blind.

Show it anyway

Yea because everyone should stalk people before becoming friends so that we know every possible aspect of their life.

maybe she can take the saying figurative and noone needs to worry

I have to ask, how long have you known this friend? And how well? I would think that, at some point, the fact that her daughter is blind would have been mentioned.

Most people don't randomly bring up oh yeah by the way my daughter is blind. It's probably a friend from work it sounds like and they aren't that close. They may just be building their friendship

It's strange that you didn't know your friend's daughter was blind. Even if you were just casual friends, you'd think it would have been mentioned... If this FML is true, I feel bad for you.

eek! I'd feel so bad if I did that. :( I'm sure the parents weren't too offended by it. If you did it in the first place, it probably means you don't know them well enough to be aware that their daughter was blind.

To everyone here saying the OP should have known. Some blindness happens over time. Just because the girl is blind doesn't mean that she was born with it. Sometime it happens over a little while or some medical ailment could have made her blind. My grandfather developed blindness over time due to macular degeneration. Other causes are tumors, rare genetic diseases, etc. Plus also being "blind" by todays standard doesn't mean your eyes are completely white or shut. A loss of a majority of your vision could label you as blind though you may see just not very clearly. Levels of blindness people. Levels of blindness.

So even I'd she did get blind over an illness and the OP wasn't told about it still shows that the OP and the friend weren't that close.

Gotta love the people that write small novels in the comment section

I agree with the people asking how you could be friends with someone and not know her daughter is blind. Wtf?

I think, regarding the circumstances, that could actually be a nice gesture. Because like #1 said, it's figurative.
