I can see how that would happen, especially if you are really nervous. At least you had the chivalry to talk to her dad first. Although, I really am in suspense of what his reaction was.
I think the bigger problem is that you felt the need to ask her father instead of her. Freudian slips, while embarrassing, are excusable. Wanton disregard for the sovereignty of your girlfriend, his daughter, is not.

He probably thought you were unusually considerate to be asking first! I wish that he had said "I'd prefer that you propose to her first" but as a dad I think it's more likely that he beat you to a pulp with the nearest blunt object.
