Or it was a joke puzzle. A friend bought me a puzzle for my birthday a few years back that was 1000 pieces, but by design only had 997 pieces in the box. It's messed up, but it's funny.

Maybe it was messed up when it was manufactured? If not then check for one that didn't fit quite right before. I hate it when I think something fits but then it actually isn't supposed to be there.

I love doing puzzles and I had my fair share of putting the pieces in the wrong place thinking it went there. Puzzles are fun, but they are a pain in the ass.
