Today, I applied and was accepted for a part-time network engineering position. Being contract work they asked me what I charge. I replied, "$12 an hour." After a look of surprise they accepted me for the position and said, "Our last guy charged $200 an hour, you're a bargain." FML

How do you be in a position like that and not know how much your competitors are charging?

what the hell do you do that $200/hour is an acceptable pay rate? I need to get into that field

Wow, it was an engineering position, how could you think $12/hr would be the most you could get? Wow.

should of thought about it more. ydi

ever hear of researching the job yur going into? dumass

You really needed to research this better. I would never let a 'network engineer' who charged $12 an hour near any of my equipment or config files without some serious vetting, regardless of his or her certifications. Only non-Union cable techs and tier 0/1 tech support are in that pay range at most US companies. Saying you will work for so little usually makes the people who manage you and work with you think that there is either something really wrong with your resume (perhaps a lie about immigration, felonies, or a bad history with employers), or that you completely lack confidence in your own skills. This is something an hour or two of research could have prevented. However, be happy you have a job and are gaining experience.

omg I hate it when this happens it eats at you man it eats at you

$200? where are you located? my wife is the best chech point architect in the area and she only makes half that.
