Today, I applied and was accepted for a part-time network engineering position. Being contract work they asked me what I charge. I replied, "$12 an hour." After a look of surprise they accepted me for the position and said, "Our last guy charged $200 an hour, you're a bargain." FML

How do you be in a position like that and not know how much your competitors are charging?

what the hell do you do that $200/hour is an acceptable pay rate? I need to get into that field

YDI for not looking at pay rats for this job or even asking the pay history at that specific company.

Did you work at McDonalds before this job or something? Why would you say $12.

#1. you just got robbed bahahahaha

YDI for not researching what you're worth. I didnt even have to get to the part about how much the other guy charged before my jaw dropped. It's pretty simple to research that kind of stuff. Just go to a job board such as Dice.com or salary.com.

:( sorry op you should have said well then I want at least 150 or else I quit then wait for the reply.... at least that's what I wouldve done....

what I always do is check other people's prices and go 1 to 5% under the lowest good one. always works

hey man, if 12 is your price and ur happy with it... who cares.
