The same sort of thing has happened to me. My father's first language is Spanish, but although he spoke Spanish AROUND me, he never spoke Spanish TO me and I never learned more than a word or two. When I finally started taking Spanish classes as a teenager and realizing what all those things he said actually MEANT, it was a real eye opener.
my grandmother always called me "cabesa'd nob" (that's just what it sounded like anyway...) I found out that was Portuguese for cabbage head.
