Hard as it may be, you guys are both better off if you tell him what he's doing wrong. I'm sure he's aware that whatever he's doing isn't exactly doing the trick as it should but hasn't got a clue what he could do better. You're the only one who can advise him, and the only one who's missing out if you don't!
