Today, my mom had big news. I've been trying to get her to quit smoking because of second hand smoke for 20 years. She learned today that secondhand smoke severely affects animals as well. Her big news? She's quitting. She doesn't want to hurt the dog. FML

Smoking is cool

Today, I've learned that you can get chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from second-hand smoke, even if you don't smoke. I don't have it yet, but my parents are heavy smokers. They insist that the health risks are "exaggerated". Why don't you go tell that to my grandma, who actually DOES have COPD and was a heavy smoker until recently? FML

Today, my future mother-in-law told me she thought I was severely allergic to cigarette smoke. That hasn't stopped her from chain-smoking around me for the last 3 years. FML

Today, I overheard my mom, who quit smoking years ago, saying that I am the only person who stresses her out badly enough to want to smoke a cigarette. I have never once tried to stress her out, and in fact I do everything I can to make her life easier. She works in retail. FML

Today, my mother called me and told me that she went to the hospital. This wasn't a surprise 'cos she normally goes to the hospital for the smallest things. I was a smartass and asked, "What now? You finally have lung cancer from all those cigarettes?" Apparently, she does. FML

Today, it's the third day since my mum quit smoking, and I realised that her health-drive is having a negative effect on my own health when she bitch slapped me down the stairs because she didn't get a joke I told her. FML

Today, my mother tried to tell me that nicotine is the only substance that ensures weight loss, and that nicotine has been passed down in our family for over 5 generations of heavy smoking relatives. Then she encouraged me to start smoking. FML

Today, my grandmother - who has been a heavy smoker for almost forty years, and does not believe in the dangers of smoking - was diagnosed with COPD. Also, I'm now at a greater risk of developing COPD because of her (and my parents, who also smoke). FML

Today, I broke up with the girl I'd been dating for two months because she started smoking. This is a deal breaker for me. I just found out from her friend that she started smoking for the sole purpose of getting me to break it off and now plans to quit. FML

its crazy how much more people care about animals than people these days... a lot like in the movies, you can watch hundreds of people die and be upset, but as soon as a dog dies you begin to feel bad (example is i am legend, the human race was being destroyed and nobody cared until dog died)

As a kid growing up my mom smoked heavily and she had cats. Years later those same cats looked just awful. Their eyes were cloudy and yellow, their fur was yucky, and one of them got cancer. I am convinced it was due to her smoking because since then all MY cats have lived in a smoke-free home and have enjoyed perfect health. She still hasn't given it up, not for me, not for her cats :/

This is kind of an FML. The point isn't that her mom quitting is good for mom and dog, but that her mom cares more about the dog than her daughter. #30, correction: people care more about animals because everyone knows more backstabbing assholes who are people than backstabbing assholes who are animals. I tend to think of it as which species has more generally proved its unworthiness to me. Considering family, though, is different.

Kinda sucks when people prefer a slobbery mutt over their own flesh and blood. I got nothing against animals, but when you have to choose your pet or your child, you SHOULD choose your child! My parents didn't quit until recently because that's just how addicted they were. At least they had the decency to smoke outside where it couldn't hurt me and my kid sister.

Its good your mom is quiting, but if you read the studies, you would learn that 2nd hand smoke has no negative affects unless you are in a tiny apartment with no windows and a chain smoker.

What is wrong with you people? My grandma quit smoking and I'm happy because I want HER to be healthy. Why is it that you people think about is second hand smoking? What about the people who is smoking that you care about?

i just adopted a cat that smells like smoke, it is so hard to get out - i can't even imagine what this cat has been exposed to, at least your mom is quitting and not putting another person or animal at risk.
