Today, my mom blew her top when I casually mentioned that it's pretty well known that the story of Jesus is a retelling of older Persian and Egyptian stories. She then went on to yell at me that I wasted my money on college and "book learning". FML

The story in Genesis is probably what you're thinking of. Creation and early history are told similarly in many cultures. Jesus is a historical figure that is proven to have existed, Messiah or not.

More than that, there are strong comparisons with other religions too. Look up comparisons between the buddha (buddhism is from the same general area but is around 500 years older than christianity) and jesus.

I do believe you should respect your mom's beliefs. Of course she'd flip out on you if you say something she holds dear to her heart is all a lie. Religion is just one of those things you let people decide for themselves.
