Finally had something FML-worthy to write and it got up! Wow, I'm surprised at the amount of supportive comments, they definitely make me feel a little better! I admit I shouldn't have been quite so rude, but I am fiercely protective of my dogs (they're rescue dogs and I've had them for 13 years) and I really don't like kids, and especially the mothers that, like her, look like they can't even look after themselves. I called the child dirty because he was quite literally dirty, stains all down his shirt and crumbs and chocolate all around his mouth. I know they may have happened since she left the house and the mum might have no way to clean him but there are so so many women on benefits who just have children for the sake of it around my area when they obviously can't afford to look after them. My two biggest peeves, women like that and people insulting dogs got to me big time! Thankfully I haven't seen her in work yet, hoping she'll steer clear of me and go to a different cashier in the future....

I think this is a situation that might have embarrassed both sides, which hopefully neutralizes it and makes it something to be awkwardly laughed off.
Check your company policy op, most companies are only responsible for your behavior when you are on their clock and premisis, make this VERY clear to your boss that the incident happened on your time and your responsibility to uphold their reputation and standards ends when you punch that time clock
I think OP getting disciplined at work for something that clearly happened outside work shouldn't even be considered. The lady was rude to OP ('keep those mutts away' was probably said in a very impolite tone), plus I think it's time we stop treating every customer as a king. It gives some people too much freedom to be evil annoying assholes to the salesperson for no goddamn reason.
Oh my gosh, that's extremely awkward!
That's on her for being rude. It should be HER fml because she's being a jerk for apparently no reason.
You two should have both laughed it off, it would have been a funny story for later :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm totally on your side, but you still didn't have the right to insult the kid. He didn't say anything rude to you.
Yes, SHE insulted OP's dogs. Which I agree was very rude, and she definitely deserved an insult back. However, *the kid* didn't say anything.
107, the dogs also didn't say anything but they were insulted.
Kids are NOT like dogs. I hope you wisen up before you have any of your own.
my puppy is like a kid! cries when he doesn't get his way and is going thru puberty humping everything! They are so like kids hahaha
@113 that doesn't make insulting the kid any better. Both insults were directed to life-forms who did absolutely nothing to get this treatment. The mother was a rude bitch, she is the one who should be called out on it,not her kids or anyone else for that matter.
You're stupid
It's great that you defended your dog, it's terrible she insulted it. However, you shouldn't have insulted her child. You can insult her and her ability to care for her child but to insult the child directly is wrong because the child is an innocent. Your dog is an innocent too so she was definitely wrong for starting this. I don't know why people who say you shouldn't have insulted the kid are being down voted, the child is innocent and completely dependent on their parent. Insult the mom all you want if she deserves it.
She was rude about it. When people that don't like dogs see one they just flip out.
The difference being that a kid will understand the insults said to them, while a dog won't. Unless they're yelling at the dog, which I assume she wasn't. You shouldn't insult a kid because that hurts him just as much as the mother.
#100 - you don't understand
Sounds like 121 is the one getting the point. The woman insulted OP's dogs, so OP had the right to say whatever she wanted about the woman - but to yell at her *about* her kid *within earshot* of her kid - that's where it gets mean. I understand anger gets the best of all of us sometimes, but you have to think about innocent bystanders. I hope the kid was too young to understand. That said, I'm wondering if the woman ever did show up at work and go back to your register! This follow-up needs a follow-up :)
Kids are like dogs the only difference is that if your kid bites it gets told off... of my dog bites it gets.put down
#116 have you ever owned a dog? They're exactly like kids, you feed them, you wash them, you protect them, you care for them and they care for you. Now tell me in what way should i "wise up"
And OP don't take her seriously, its a pain but its common with mothers, with owning dogs especially big ones you'll get that alot, its mainly out of fear, people who don't really know dogs, I've walked my dog and some people will be asking to pet her while others will be scowling at me or demanding i put a muzzle on "it". But its always the same type of people, they don't know dogs they've never owned one and they're afraid and the only logical response is to ignore them and keep walking
I have kids but I had my puppy first. He just turned 2 years old and is a 95lb German Sheppard. You were much more polite than I would of been. Especially since you weren't at work.
I agree with the whole dogs are like kids. Many people treat their pets as family and in a way they are very similar to having children. both need food, water, and shelter. both need regular checkups and vaccinations. both need love. she shouldn't have insulted your "kid"; she asked for a shot back. I'm sure if her child looked dirty the way you described then she probably is one of those parents that allows their kid to be dirty all the time. there are always public restrooms that can be used to wash up if no wet wipe is handy. go you for sticking up for your dog and letting her have it :)
there is nothing wrong with what you did i wouldve said the same thing. im fiercely protective of my little puppy too (also a rescue) and shes better groomed than most peoples kids these days. she was just being an asshole and if you DO happen to run into her at work i would pretend like the whole thing never happened. youd hope shed have the decemcy to steer clear but you never know. i work in retail so i know you have to be polite to the biggest pricks but what you do on your time is on you and she started it. besides if she tries to start something at your work its better to act like you have no idea what shes talking about. you did nothing wrong.
I think dogs are much better than dogs actually
As both a mother and a dog owner, you were right to snap back at that woman. I treat my dog the same as my kids; she's my little (ginormous) fur-baby. There was no reason for her rudeness, yours was justified.
ermmmmmm to all those saying Dogs are like Kids, there's one big difference - the kid (if it's old enough) can understand what is being said about him/her. The dog can't. Therefore OP could well have hurt the kid's feelings. This does not apply to the dog. I'm not saying the mum wasn't at fault, but let's be sensible here!
dogs understand what we're saying, #152
My dog is just like my child! Just as much part of the family as any of the nieces or nephews!
never know how people are outside of the work place! good luck (._.)/
I really hope that you don't have children if you can compare raising a child to caring for a dog. While it's true that all living creatures need food, water, and shelter there are very large differences in caring for the two (even if you're one of those crazies that dresses their pets).
Can you ALL please shut up and realise that the kid and dogs are both innocent? Maybe the kid was young and couldn't care for himself, so he was dirty. Blame the mother. The kid and the dogs were insulted and they didn't do anything. The woman shouldn't have insulted the dogs. OP replied from what I see as rage, as anyone else would have. It was simply a bad situation that the mother sparked. The kid is innocent. The mother is the culprit.
I have 3 kids and a small dog. Sometimes I swear my dog is just as needy as a toddler always wanting LOVE and AFFECTION like a CHILD!! OP had the right to lash back and if the child was older like so many of you state then let them hear it and learn that being dirty like that is gross and let them learn a valuable lesson about hygeine
What's a sprog? lol
Dogs understand our vocal tones and influctions in our voices and a few select words and commands. They do not have a full comprehension of language as we use it. Their natural communication relies mainly on body language, scent and vocal tones. The dogs likely understood that the woman was being hostile however, they were not likely to understand that they were being insulted. Dogs don't insult one another for no reason. That's a trait that only humans posess. It's a foreign concept for them.
well then for sure, keep your dog's away if the kids are covered in chocolate
Dogs ARE like kids. And if OP is calling them sprogs and says they don't like kids? They'll likely have none of their own. Not everyone wants to breed. So in this case, the rude lady did insult OP's kids.
out of work ... fair game
