Today, I was walking my dogs when a woman at a bus stop quite rudely exclaimed, "Keep those mutts away from my kid". I replied just as rudely that I wouldn't want them anywhere near her dirty sprog. It was then we both realised she was a customer that I regularly talk to at work. FML

Finally had something FML-worthy to write and it got up! Wow, I'm surprised at the amount of supportive comments, they definitely make me feel a little better! I admit I shouldn't have been quite so rude, but I am fiercely protective of my dogs (they're rescue dogs and I've had them for 13 years) and I really don't like kids, and especially the mothers that, like her, look like they can't even look after themselves. I called the child dirty because he was quite literally dirty, stains all down his shirt and crumbs and chocolate all around his mouth. I know they may have happened since she left the house and the mum might have no way to clean him but there are so so many women on benefits who just have children for the sake of it around my area when they obviously can't afford to look after them. My two biggest peeves, women like that and people insulting dogs got to me big time! Thankfully I haven't seen her in work yet, hoping she'll steer clear of me and go to a different cashier in the future....

I love how people back peddle once they realize it's someone they know.

Right? I'm totally with you. If you have to put on a different face to the people you know, you're being fake! OP's attacker sounds like a deer in the headlights! "Oh shit, she's seen my true form!" Guys, if you're an asshole, don't practice covering that shit up. Practice not being an asshole, and whatever you are, own it. If she's afraid of dogs or whatever her deal is, this is the part where rude lady should own up and aplogize, not simply try to pretend something like that didn't just happen.

In retail, 90% of the job is putting on a fake smile and making your customers forget that you're a real human being with feelings, a life outside work, friends, and family... just so they can go on pretending that the world is a wonderful place to spend their money in.

Don't worry OP it was good to defend your dogs, people can be arrogant. I treat my dog as well as a child, and you shouldn't let anyone be rude to them or you. It's not a loss, if she likes the business she'll come again. You did the right thing so don't be too hard on yourself

She was testing you...and you flat our failed...

Or she's a rude bitch and op's response was well deserved.

I would've sympathized with you if you hadn't brought her kid into it. Call her a bitch, tell her to piss off, and I'd side with you. But since you had to insult her kid, you both deserved it.

The only difference between the dog and the child is that one was adopted and the other was given birth to. Both require love, care, and attention. I have a kid and a dog and I'll be damned if someone would get away with insulting either of them.

And the only other difference is one of them is actually a DOG.

#62, some ppl think of their dogs as childern.

57, the difference is that the child understood OP's insult, while OP's dogs did not understand the woman's insult. The mother was the one being rude; it was absolutely uncalled for to lash out at the kid who hadn't done anything wrong.

the dog hadn't done anything wrong either by the looks of the story. 57 was only trying to say that some people have different views on their animals and children

57- I never said it was okay for her to insult your dog. Heck, I have a dog too, and anybody insulted him, there would be hell to pay. I just said that If someone insults your dog, insult the person directly, and not their kid, who had nothing to do with it.

So cussing in front of a child is better than calling them dirty? Kids are dirty, I doubt it hurt their feelings. I would be more upset that I didn't get to pet the dogs

I would do the same thing if she said that about my dogs. you're not at work so you can't get in trouble for it. nbd op
