Nice to see "shit you not" has survived

Parents are kind of ....special. Especially when they have never been in your certain situation.

I'm a T1 diabetic going on 14 years and I still get food policing comments from random strangers and even family when I'm out eating and they see me injecting my meal bolus. I have well meaning friends and family who send me all kinds of quackery articles about curing my diabetes through yoga, cinnamon pills, etc. The ignorance surrounding the disease, even by many doctors who aren't your endocrinologist, can be staggering. For those who don't know you're either genetically disposed to developing one type or the other or you're not. There is no one to blame for a person having diabetes besides those responsible for their genetic code. The myth of the fat lazy fast food junkie self-induced diabetes needs to go the way of the do-do bird. OP you can tell your mom it's her fault if you feel like throwing a barb back at her. I'm sorry your mother had such a poor reaction to your diagnosis OP. I hope she comes around and educates herself on what it's going to take to keep you healthy.

I'm with you there. I've had it for 17 years now. Although, my friends and other family members tend to be more cautious and scared of it and hurting me than intersecting by giving me advice. Although a vendor in Sam's club did advise me to pray it away

The ignorance surrounding diabetes is astronomical. Working in diabetes education teaches you that really fast. Most people don't even have any idea what type one is, and that does include most primary care physicians. It's frightening. Best advice is to get a good care team with an endocrinologist and a certified diabetes educator. Get on an insulin pump if you can. And if you need it, continuos glucose monitors are totally worth it.

TBH my son was diagnosed last july. A month before he turned 9. I had no idea what to expect. I was kicking myself bc i thought i caused it, i thought maybe i fed him too many sweets. The dr said i could have fed him a pound of sugar a day since he was born and it wouldn't have caused it.

You need a new diet. And exercise.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease; it is unavoidable. You could be the healthiest, fittest person alive and you would get it. Please educate yourself before judging; you have just done the equivalent of telling someone diagnosed with cancer that they should have eaten less and exercised more.

sorry to hear your mom is so uncaring. life as a diabetic is very hard. I was 17 when I found out I was type 1 diabetic and am now 37. you can still have a very normal life.Just without all the sugar and with card counting. I'm also now a mom. my husband and I got pregnant with our son when I was 35 and he's was born right after I turned 36. I would suggest taking a diabetic education class at least every 3-5 yrs as things change all the time with diabetes. good luck to you.

You don't have to reply to this, but how did the pregnancy go? I've always wondered. I have had it for 17 years, and that's one of my biggest fears. I know it's a bit harder for us to stay pregnant considering all of the factors of carrying a child full term and keeping our levels and selves healthy

If it helps, I was recently diagnosed with type 1, and the first thing my sister told me was it's because she saw me eating chocolate the night before, that's what caused it. She's 18...

Your mom needs education. Good luck on your new journey and battle! My 6 year old son also has it. Ask, if you need anything!

Same. She'll get to realise the difference soon hopefully :)

well as a great man once said: "stupidity is forever"
