OP probably means he wasn't brushing his teeth properly. A lot of people don't know that you're not supposed to brush side to side because it pushes the plaque to the back of your mouth. I don't think she meant he wasn't brushing his teeth at all, because surely she would have noticed that before she married him.

My friend doesn't brush his teeth at all. I tried to convince him to start, telling him that his teeth will rot at an early age, and you'd have to get dentures, just like my dad. He claimed that it'd be cool to have fake teeth and be like my dad.
