You actually shouldn't punish a child for doing that since it's a natural thing. You should've just explained to them it is something they are supposed to do in private at home...

A lot of you are giving the complete right response! Exploration of the body is completely normal. Punishing or shaming the child tells the child that their body is shameful and wrong, this could lead to serious problems down the road. The correct response would have been to tell the child that, that's something they do in their room when there alone. If it was problematic (i.e they were doing it to the point of hurting themselves, they were told to stop and the child was unable to) then, that would be cause for concern. Healthy, normal kids ********** for reasons other than sexual gratification. It's uncomfortable and honestly a bit creepy, but it's life. We learned the hard way with the "A" in "BATT"!
