Well, the OP probably thought that his/her stupid parents would never touch her safe place, a bunch of books, and if she had put it in a bank, the stupid parents would have taken it out and used it for booze.

That really really sucks, but why would you have kept them between the pages of books? I mean, I can sort of see the logic but if I were you and had the $300 I'd have put that in a savings account where it would accrue interest.
