Today, as part of a charity project called Operation Valentine, I worked with 150 other volunteers to make care packages and Valentine's Day cards to send to the troops in Afghanistan, thanking them for their courage. My boyfriend called the cards "cheating" and now refuses to see me. FML

Today, I spent an ungodly amount of money to send my long-distance boyfriend a giant bouquet of roses for Valentine's Day. A few hours after making the non-refundable payment, he let me know we weren't going to work out, and that he was already sleeping with someone else. FML
Today, I went to the store to get Valentine's Day gifts to decorate my boyfriend's and my new apartment. He was there shopping with his wife. FML
Today, for Valentine's Day, my boyfriend gave me the half-eaten chocolate bar that I left in his fridge two weeks ago. FML
Today, I caught a flight to see my boyfriend, who is stationed in the army 300 miles away. When I was just 15 minutes from the base he called to say that we should break up. Now I'm heading back to California, single and broke. FML
Today, I got my husband his favorite candy and wine for Valentine's Day. He got mad and accused me of doing it to "bribe" him into bed, since he hasn't been wanting sex lately. When I asked how he could say something so cruel, he admitted that he's been cheating on me, and my gift made him feel guilty about it. FML
Today, I confronted my boyfriend after he received a text with a bunch of hearts on it. After arguing, turns out it was from me. FML
Today, after ordering a custom $200 Valentine's Day gift box for my husband, he gave it away to a female coworker upon delivery because Valentine's Day isn't for guys. I hope she like the new Xbox one controller and all the gift cards as well. FML
Today, it’s Valentine’s Day. My boyfriend promised me that instead of a packed chain restaurant we would have “dinner under the stars.” We ended up having Slurpees and Slim Jims in the 7-Eleven parking lot. He called me ungrateful for not appreciating his “romantic gesture.” FML
Today, I got an email saying the gift I'd ordered for my boyfriend of three years had been sent. I ordered it a couple of days ago because I thought he needed cheering up. I guess he found a better way of doing so himself; he broke up with me yesterday. FML
Today, I was in class when someone came in with a rose for me. My teacher made me read the card aloud: "I'm breaking up with you, happy Valentine's." It was from my boyfriend. FML

then u deserve better. having been in combat, the most pressious thing i had was a letter written by a lady who said she thanked me for what i was going through. it gave me hope. it kept me alive i belive. so if he can not understand that you are trying to help the people that give you the rite's that u get every day, then you are better off without them. it was people like you that helped to keep me alive and bring me home to have a little girl of my own. and i greatfully thank you.

I can understand why he's upset, though. Care packages are okay. Valentine cards are something else, though - aren't they supposed to be sent to person you really like?

Valentines can be expressions of romantic love, or simply of warmth and affection. In this context? Does he really think that his girlfriend and all the other volunteers are expressing romantic love to thousands of strangers?

86, IMO, valentine sent to random stranger would mean that feelings towards people sender is supposed to really like aren't that different from feelings towards strangers - i.e. sender don't care about anybody. I'd be upset if my girlfriend sent valentine to me and then sent few hundreds to random people. It would imply she doesn't really feel any different about me compared to them. Yes, that's silly, irrational, but feelings aren't rational, and that's how I would feel. You can't feel affection towards somebody you never met or seen or heard of, so those valentines are a lie. If you care about your troops (that are stationed on another side of globe for no good reason), you could send them gifts on any random day (there would be no ambiguous meanings attached). Or send gifts to individual soldiers on their birthdays or something.

Valentines can also be used to say thank you. It just depends on what is written in them. I remember handing out valentines to everyone in my elementary class. Does that mean I felt romantic feelings towards everyone in my class? No, it didn't. Also people give valentines to their friends. Valentines can be used for many things, it just depends on what is written.
