Not to seem judgmental, but I don't see how this can be anything other than a YDI.

I broke an ice machine once. We had swipe cards for the registers, and mine fell into the bin when I was filling it up with ice. A couple of weeks later, the string came out and wrapped around the parts inside. Our boss had to empty the machine and take it apart to unwind my string from it, cussing a blue streak the whole time. He found my card and left the machine empty for me to refill the next day. One of the first customers to use it after it was repaired tried to fill his cup with ice and got the clip from my swipe card in his cup. Not as bad as breaking the pop machine THREE times. Maybe the window or the kitchen is where you're supposed to be.

In my defense the first time the key broke I was new and the lid for the ice bin slipped and landed on it. the second time it broke I barely touched it, had applied the force you would to unlock a door or turn a stove dial. this time... jamming the machine off.... yeah okay, my fault.

So you call the police, file a report, and press charges. Then, after charges have been filed, you sit down with your spouse and your mother-in-law, and discuss dropping the charges on condition of her 1) paying for your damage and 2) agreeing to never mistreat you again, and agreeing to steps to better behave around each other and respect each other. Then if your mother in law ever does something illegal to you again, you press charges and show no mercy. She will learn her lesson once she realizes there are consequences to her actions. She sounds either like a selfish as*shole in general, a narcissist, a sociopath or just your garden variety raging b*tch. The only way to get through to people like that, is to make them realize consequences for their actions. Normal societal norms and notions of respect or decency generally don't apply to these kinds of people. You don't need to get angry, or mean- the most dangerous person is one who remains calm. When you call the police, and file the report, be calm and relaxed. Understand you are doing the right thing. Don't be afraid. Don't be angry and emotional. Just do it.

I had a similar issue every time I changed the receipt paper in the self checkout machine at Home Depot the paper would get jammed after the 3rd time I just stopped changing it.

Quit messing with the machine until you get trained on the right way to operate it. You're too expensive and annoying.
