Sometimes the job involves telling the student to exert some effort before giving up and asking questions.

How many questions do you ask?
At some point, education devolves into spoon-feeding. Sometimes questions just indicate that you don't want to put any effort into learning.

Was this during class or during office hours? That makes a huge difference

If your questions are things that you’re curious about and don’t necessarily need to know, then you might be taking up time that he needs to teach other students the material they are also paying to learn. I asked too many questions in one of my classes and the teacher told me to write all my questions down and ask them at the end of the year.

If you're asking a bunch of questions during lecture, that means he can't get through everything he was going to lecture on so you're taking away from other students as well as yourself. If you're asking during office hours, that's another matter. Did he mean you're asking questions that should be answered in the reading, and you're asking before doing the reading?
