Today, after joking with the guy I've been talking to for 8 months about his plans for my birthday, he told me he didn't want to 'lead me on' and wants to stay friends. FML

Even if you were dating, it's not right to expect them to make plans for your birthday. You're not their responsibility. If they want to do something like that it should be their decision alone and not brought on by you insinuating you expect it. I'm also with the other comments though.. you've been "talking" for 8 months. If anything was going to get more serious between you two it would have happened already.
