Unfortunately, drunk people who drink and drive don't use logic and reasoning, not good logic anyway. I've heard so many excuses. They don't want the "inconvenience" of walking, or taking a cab, they want to use their own car. Some even justify it that by driving on their own, they'll get there faster therefore putting less people at risk. Also, many think "oh, it'll never happen to me" in regards to potentially killing people, or crashing. Then there's the idiocy of "I drive better while drunk," or "I'm the best drunk driver." I personally think public intoxication is a stupid law though. If someone is being abusive or belligerent in public, then fine, charge them. But I don't think we should charge people who are functioning, acting fine, and choosing to do the right thing. They tell us "if you're drinking, be safe, don't drive, walk," but then reprimand us for walking. It makes no sense.

You're not going to like this, but if someone who is intoxicated needs to go home and his/her options are between walking and a car; they should take the car every time. Walking home drunk increases your chances of getting killed by 6 compared to driving home drunk. The best option is to call a taxi/uber/Lyft.

That may be the best option, but it isn't always available. The reason it's less dangerous for the drunk person to drive rather than walk is because alcohol relaxes you, so when you crash you don't get injured, but that can't be said for the other victims. Everyday 28 people die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an impaired driver, that's about one death every 53 minutes, and that's just in the US. That's a lot more than the deaths or injuries caused from people walking home drunk. The increased chances of something happening to you while walking after drinking is not a valid argument for drinking and driving. You chose to drink, what happens to you when you're walking home is your problem, because YOU'RE the one that chose to get drunk, you're the one that took that risk. If you don't want that risk, DON'T drink. I'm not worried about what will happen to me should I drink and drive, I'm worried about what I could do to OTHER people. If I choose to drink, I took the risk of what could happen to me if I need to walk home. You're the only one that consented to your drinking, the other driver did not.

I would love to see your stats that say that driving home is somehow safer than walking home.

Hi Michael, I see that you're using the freakonomics number to reach your conclusion. I'd recommend going over what they did to get that number again because it isn't an accurate representation of the situation. Without knowing a population size, you really can't say that walking home drunk is more dangerous than driving home drunk. And in that excerpt, they even mention the ethicist's stance; if a driver gets into an accident then they would hurt people other than themselves. Here's food for thought: The pedestrians getting injured or killed on their way home while drunk are in a mindset where falling asleep on the curb and stumbling and playing in the street are good ideas. Are you really going to tell me that when a person is that intoxicated they should be driving because it's safer?

What are you taking about #34? The only one who said driving home was safer than walking home, was you. "Walking home drunk increases your chances of getting killed by 6 compared to driving home drunk." I argued that driving home drunk is not safer, especially for the other people on the road. It's better to walk. You contradicted yourself with your second statement. So what exactly are you trying to say, do you think it's better to walk home when drunk, or drive? Cause I'm saying it's better to walk.
