You would have to be a complete fool to share finances with someone you barely know regardless of if they are working or not. You did the only smart thing. By the way be very, very careful to keep money, credit cards, or anything of value locked away from your roommate - They have already shown they probably have no compunction about stealing from you. A small safe or lockbox might be necessary… Obviously your roommate was hoping to take advantage of you and calling you a “racist Karen” was their way of trying to force you to do as they wanted. Never give in to A-holes who try to manipulate you because once you do, the manipulation just gets worse… You might want to talk to whoever is in charge of student housing or your representative in this matter and see if you can get rid of this A-hole of a roommate.
