It is indeed awkward and not the best way to find out what he likes, but I hope after giving it some time, you approach him to talk about it.. that is, if you are someone who is not homophobic. He was obviously not ready to come out of the closet yet.

OP here! Just to clarify, I've got no problem with him being gay at all....it was just the very, er, abrupt way I found out and the embarrassment for him too (it didn't help that I'm one of those who thinks anal sex is gross, but each to their own....) Yep I guess you can say I should've caught into the signs before but he's never given off a strong 'gay' vibe or anything, he's always been very much himself. It's good that he is with someone, definitely ;)
