Obviously there's some miscommunication here. Did he ask you on a date? Offer a night out? Or did you text him a couple of cute messages that he happened to reciprocate and magically that made the two of you a couple? He obviously doesn't see you on the same relationship level as you see him. So something somewhere wasnt said. Fishing for attention from him clearly isn't going solve anything either.

Sounds like he was trying to figure out something to say that didn't shut you down but also didn't indicate a commitment he wasn't ready for.
