Today, after selling their car, my parents decided to inform me that my car (that I paid for myself) is now going to be the "Family Car". They also informed me that since it is, after all, my car, I'll still have to pay for the gas and maintenance. FML

If my parents did that to me I'd tell them they can either start contributing to gas and maintenance or they can start finding other ways to travel, like a bus, or a bike. They may be your parents but if you paid for that car with your own money, you should still have a say on who can and can't use it, and you shouldn't have to foot the car bills yourself if you aren't the only one using it.

Just tell them no, it's your property and you aren't giving it to them because they can't pay for their own car.

oh boy does that sucks. I'm sure the "family" didn't help you buy it so that baby is yours! put your foot down and end that way of thinking! had that same kind of thing happen, but with a computer. Brother bought me one and said it was mine. apparently my dad translated that to "family computer" because everyone was using it...and more than I was...and then it got a virus and crapped out. got money from school and bought a laptop to which he also thought it was for the family until I found pornographic pictures saved on the desktop. I said to hell with him and take it everywhere I go if he's going to be at home alone

if you truly bought it all by yourself, with no help from them, that ******* sucks -_- if my parents ever did that to me, I'd have no choice but to let them because they'd have to pay my tuition for university and would just stop paying that until I let them use the car. but I'd just go out a LOT and bring it back empty. and not get matenence on it, get my friends to pick it up if something goes wrong with it. however, if they shared the expenses with me, I'd have no problem with it because they did raise me and I'm grateful for that, and they're paying my tuition fees. I feel realy bad for you, OP. parents suck :--->:
