Over the rainbow bridge
Today, our family cat died. I had to explain this to my two small children, who had no experience with death. I ended up bawling like a baby while they consoled me, telling me she had, "gone to a better place." FML

Autumn: Leaves and Laughter
When the leaves fall, the laughter rises. Discover autumn stories as crisp as dried leaves!
Today, I walked outside and found our kitten, my kids' favorite pet, convulsing and choking on the carport. Nothing we did helped and she died in my arms five minutes later. We've buried her, and I'm dreading going home and telling my boys that she's passed. FML
Today, I got a job babysitting two really sweet kids. When their parents left, they told me that their cat had died. I told them how sorry I was, to which one of them replied, "That's okay. We still have him in a box. Wanna see?" FML
Today, our family cat died. He had a disease (forget the name). My sister brought home a bunny, and I thought nothing of it until I tried to make the cat and the bunny friends. Sadly, it triggered his illness from stress, and he tragically passed away 4 days later. I still believe it's my fault; everyone says otherwise. FML
Today, I had to put my 17 year-old cat down. I cried the whole way up to the vet's office and back. After finally coming to terms with the situation, and trying to forget, my dad's friend walks up to me and says, "So, I heard you killed your cat?" FML
Today, I knew it was going to be a fun day when I woke up to find that my kids' new puppy had died in the night. FML
Today, my husband's cat died. He has resorted to calling me by her name to comfort himself. FML
Today, I took my cat to the vet. He said he felt a strange lump that could be serious. I got really upset and picked her up, crying. The vet then told me I had to put her down. Absolutely devastated by having to euthanize my cat, I passed out. He meant I had to put her back on the table. FML
Today, I had to explain to my boss that the reason I was sobbing hysterically as she told me that I was getting a pay raise was because I was going to the vet to have my sick and dying cat put down. Good news at a bad time. FML
Today, I visited a friend's house, where I found out he has a trio of very friendly cats in his yard. After playing with them for a bit, I went inside. An hour later, my friend informed me that one of them had died. None of them were showing any signs of being near death. I'm sad and confused. FML
Today, I received an unexpected package from my mother. It contained my cat's ashes. Apparently he died 3 weeks ago and she thought this was the best way to tell me. FML

I hope they realized you were having a rough time and decided to unground you—after you finished your vegetables.

Those are really smart and empathetic kids for being so young! They seem to be ahead of Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development in relation to egocentrism.

I feel the need to point out she said small, not young. We don't necessarily know if they are advanced according to this scale (idk anything about it though, so i can't be specific). Just trying to keep you all honest!

Gotta admit, they caught onto the concept fast. I was around six or seven when I finally got what death was. Started bawling - coincidentally it was in the middle of my maternal grandmother's funeral service. Halfway through the memorial I figured out why we were there and just lost it.

I'm sorry that you lost a member of your family but you have done well raising your children to be compassionate.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, at least you know your children are empathetic.

As cute as the kids might seem, in most situations telling someone that their love ones "has gone to a better place" is not necessarily the correct thing to tell somebody grieving. When I experienced the lost of a few of my love ones, nothing pissed me off more than someone telling me those exact words.

I'm also wondering how they even knew the expression "gone to a better place" if they have no experience with death.
