OP, unfortunately that's a lose/lose situation. If it eventually becomes obvious the niece is a poor performer, boss will likely claim that it was your decision. If you have anything that documents the fact that you hired the niece strictly because your boss insisted, save it in case you need it some day... Theoretically in a larger company, HR (Human Resources department) is the place you go to when put under unfair job pressure like this. However, I have never personally seen HR take the side of the employee over the manager. Sometimes life sucks... OP, now might be the time to start looking for a new job before this turns into a full blown fiasco. Don't say anything about that to anyone who works there. Get your resume updated and get it out there. If you find a better job then quit and go there. There is little more miserable than working for a bad boss.
