Today, my mom broke the news that my dad secretly got married two months ago, to a woman he has been dating for 15 years, and that my parents have actually been divorced for 12 years. They just lied about it this whole time. FML

OP you might need to see a therapist after this, which is completely okay. I can't imagine how hard this is for you. I mean damn, your parents lied to you for that long? How could they have thought it would be better to lie to you? It makes absolutely no sense.

Of course they lied to you. You're their child. The inner workings of their marriage is none of your business. Learn your place. You're older now and you still can't handle the news, but even if you could it's still none of your business. Anyway, FYL, it sucks that your dad cheated and it sucks even more that they told you.

your comment really fits your name, parents owe their children the truth, children are not property or pets. children must respect and follow reasonable rules given by their parents(anything short of abuse), but that does not mean that parents are gods compared to children, the child didn't ask to be born, when you decide to have a kid(or mistakenly have one) you have a responsibility to protect and respect your children that is equally powerful of the childs responsibility to honor their parents rules/boundries of coarse they might not want to tell their child when the kid is too young, but lying to and manipulating a child is just as bad as a child lying to and manipulating their parents(bratty behaviour) parents should lie to their children to keep them safe/when they can't handle the truth, but any other time they owe their children the truth, if they don't give their children the truth their child has no reason to respect their parent or trust them anymore, and that's what ruins family bonds. parenthood is not a 1 way street of respect and obedience
