Do you keep it secret? Typically, one has several dates before they consider someone a girlfriend, and you might discuss your family on one of those. Something smells here.

it probably has something to do with the statistic about children of divorced parents being more likely to get divorced themselves. she'd probably make a decent gambler

Feels like high school drama, or there is some weird biproduct of his parents divorce, like split custody.

I would still call the excuse of split custody high school drama. Once you’re an adult you make time see people, it either works out or not.
