Be careful! HSV-1 normally infect the top part of the body and HSV-2, the lower part. Howewer, HSV-1 can still cause genital herpes and HSV-2 can produce mouth herpes. Therefore, you can infect yourself if you have mouth herpes and you are not careful. You could get genital herpes. You can even give genital herpes to your partner if you have mouth herpes. It is not because they have a different number (1 and 2) that they can't do the same thing. It is just less likely to get an HSV-2 infection on the mouth and vice-versa. Herpes is not that common among Americans. But I just got it earlier this year which wasn't that bad. But being in nose it set off a "minor" case of shingles. Now THAT was very nasty, especially for being a healthy 41 year old I was not expecting it.

Actually, they are transmittable to any mucus membrane on the body. You can get type 2 (genital) on your mouth and you can get type 1 (cold sores) on your... special area. People need to check their facts before giving someone advice, because this is how people keep spreading it.

yes oral herpes are typically referred to as cold sores or fever blisters.

I don't know if we call them like that because I speak French, but herpes is caused by a virus. You can even get it in your eyes or your skin (It is really not common to have it on your face except your mouth, but some people are not lucky). People don't really know about herpes but it is not caused by a fiever or cold. But, if you already have the virus, it can reactivate himself because your immune is a little bit down when you are sick, causing the fiever blisters you are talking about.

Most people won't display the symptoms however, since anyone with a decent resistance will not have any problems with it.
