Depending on if the cat food is in places where the cat can reach it, it's actually not a bad idea. Keeps your cat happy, healthy, and active while s/he searches for his/her meal as well as gives your cat the illusion that s/he's hunting for prey. Good for hyperactive kitties as well as fat kitties so they have to work for their meal.

Fun fact: that's actually good for cats. They like to hunt so having food just sitting out in the open isn't as stimulating for them. That said, it probably shouldn't be the whole bag of cat food.

thats actually very good for the cats mental and physical health. cats, just like dogs are natural predators and can easily become overweight and/or bored by a simple pets life. By hiding their food for them to "hunt" down, you are exercising them mentally and physically in a very beneficial way.
