Today, I was looking forward to a date with a guy I like, when he suddenly and abruptly cancelled. After 4 days of silence from him, I finally decided to stand up for myself and told him that I don't need someone as immature as him in my life anyway. Turns out his dad died. FML

It's okay, you didn't understand the circumstances. I would have done the same, especially since he decided not to say anything. I hope you were able to smooth things over.

Mostly his fault for not giving a two second response: "my dad died" "my father passed away". However... You could have texted or called to see what was going on.
