He did it because a girl that can be purchased for $2 probably looks like Gollum. He recited the Hobbit lines to stall for time so the date could end without him having to try to kiss preciousess.

Desperate? You only say that because from your pic, I can see 2 dollars would be far too much to pay for you. I have a great dating life but I was in an auction for charity and someone paid 450, the highest of the night for a two hour date with me.
