Today, I had to present a program to my supervisors in University. Not being a native English speaker, I used my own invented abbreviations for parameters in the program. Apparently STD is not an appropriate abbreviation for "standard deviation." I can still hear them laughing. FML

STD is the abbreviation that all of my statistics teachers used... and calculus. They were just being immature.

Huh? std is totally used to represent standard deviation. It's just not usually capitalized the way STD (sexually transmitted disease) is.

Stds are called STIs now anyway. Sexually transmitted infection.

Even if "STD" didn't mean something else, how did you expect your supervisors to understand you if you just invented your own abbreviations? If you don't know how to abbreviate something, ask someone or Google it. It's as simple as that.
