Today, my mother-in-law dropped by and huffily started cleaning my apartment since I "can't be bothered" to do it. I just got home from the hospital after having foot surgery. I can barely walk. FML

Seriously, write her a little Thank You card expressing your appreciating for her assistance while you were recovering. You can feel (a little) happily snarky, but still point out WHY your house was in that condition (even if it kinda was none of her business). Odds are it will earn you brownie points with your MIL for writing a (not necessarily sincere) thank you .

Seems like your husband has been complaining to his mother about your lack of "wifely" duties because how else would she know that your house was dirty...if it was? Talk to her about staying the hell out of your house and your husband about doing some housework.

Male’s default if you don’t choose.

Hah! How sexist is that?!?!? I guess the Patriarchy knows no bounds in exerting its dominance over society!

Yeah, still a nice sign that the commenter thinks OP must be female if the topic is house cleaning. Also OP is talking about "my" appartment. So they might not even live together.

Sounds like you both got off on the wrong foot.

They say if you rearrange the letters in “mother-in-law,” you can get “Woman Hitler.” In your case, that’s not just a coincidence !

Maybe your spouse should do the cleaning until you recover.

Just ignore her. Who cares what she says.As long as she doesn't see that you care what she has to say, she'll back off and most likely not come over again just to clean your home. Make a bowl of popcorn and watch a movie really loud.

You got someone to come over and clean your house for free, what is there to complain about?

Make sure you hit her up with, “You missed a spot over there.”
