Supporting your family, mortgage payment, auto payment, other bills and financial responsibilities...? A Job is pretty important, but then again I guess you won't have said job if you're blind.

Its not easy to take on a whole new major. We're still stuck on what to do.

^ still do your work, but give your eyes a break every so often by looking at other things around the room, it's a bit like standing and stretching if you sit for long periods, the strain won't be so bad then.

Don't think time off work would be very feasible especially if he has student debt to take care of. Perhaps a more likely alternative it to take longer breaks away from the computer. I recommend OP taking up smoking. It forces you to take regular and sufficiently long breaks. Besides, the fresh air is always a plus.
