Today, I told the cute girl in my office that she looked like she listened to country music, as an icebreaker. She blankly stared at me for what felt like forever, and responded with, "That's the worst thing you could say to a person," and walked away. She hasn't talked to me since. FML

Today, I tried to compliment a colleague on her new hairstyle. I said, “You look different today!” She took it as an insult, thinking I meant she looked worse. She hasn’t spoken to me since. FML
Today, my coworker, who I'm secretly in love with, asked me what my plans for the weekend were. I thought she might have been about to ask me out, so I said that I had no plans. She then rolled her eyes and said that she hates talking to, "boring people who shut down every conversation starter." FML
Today, at school, a cute girl kept glancing up at me, giggling, and looking away as soon as I looked at her. So naturally I walked up to her and asked if she wanted to go out sometime. She said she didn't like me, she was just laughing at how big a zit was on my forehead. FML
Today, I told one of my coworkers that she looked really cute today. Later she sent an email to me and cc'd the entire office saying, "It really makes me feel uncomfortable when you say things like that to me. And I shouldn't have to feel that way at work." FML
Today, I told a girl that I liked her. She replied, "Don't." FML
Today, a cute coworker came into the office with a completely new haircut. Instead of complimenting him with, "I like your hair," I said, "I like your head." He backed away slowly and avoided me for the rest of the day. FML
Today, I had a conversation with the cute girl I like at work for the first time. I told her I worked in the camping department of the store, and we had a long chat about how she heard that the guy who runs that department is a complete dick head. I am the guy who runs that department. FML
Today, at work a woman came up to the check out counter and when I greeted her she said "oh honey, you are so beautiful!" I immediately smiled and thanked her, then she looked at me and said "oh, not you." and then pointed to her ear. She was on her bluetooth. FML
Today, the ugliest girl in school walked by me and said "ewwww". FML
Today, I finally got the courage to talk to this coworker I like and ask her out for a coffee next door. She was dismissive, cold and rude, and filed a complaint with HR. FML

Well I kind of agree. Telling someone they "look like the kind of person who..." could easily be taken offensively.

That was a pretty terrible opening line, but I think it's a bit harsh for her to stop talking to you just because of that one awkward comment. She must not be very interested in you to begin with.

Well, it's not like they'd really started talking, except for OP's awkward and obviously unwelcome attempt at making conversation. Seems a bit unfair to say she's "stopped talking" to OP, she just continued not speaking with him, like they'd been doing all along.

I live in the same state as the OP. I cringed pretty hard reading this. Here, telling someone "you look like the kind of person who listens to country" is basically calling someone uneducated trailer-trash. Especially if they are white. (I know that's just a stereotype, no offense to country fans). So OP may has well have walked up to a black girl in the office and said, "you look like the kind of person who listens to rap". Sorry dude, YDI.
