Downsizing

Today, I was told that due to budget cuts, my employment will be terminated. I maxed out all my credit cards shopping and traveling for Christmas. I threw away the receipt for most of the items I’d bought. $7,200 in debt and unemployed, what a great way to start the new year. FML

Today, I was told a job offer that would've changed my life had been taken back, due to one part in the onboarding process. I’ve already sold my car, ended the lease to my apartment, and purchased a non refundable plane ticket. With little to no money and the Christmas break coming soon, I feel like I’m going to die with no backup plan. FML

It sucks to lose a job to BS. And I know a few people who lost their jobs to budget cuts. and other such things out of the blue going into Xmas... but over 7k in gifts is obscene. and even if that isn't a good metric for some people... why would you max out credit cards like that? And It sounds like you have no real savings... Sorry you lost your job the way you did, but this debt situation is your own stupidity.

You're an idiot. You have bought into this trap of being pressured into overspending for Xmas. Now, you will see the consequences of not thinking for yourself.

OP, you get my sympathies for getting laid off. That’s bad no matter when it happens… On the other hand maxing out your credit cards for Christmas shopping is very unwise and you are going to suffer for that lapse in judgement…

Sounds to me like you spended a lot of money that you didn't have. It's like playing the lottery. You lost.

with your terrible decision making skills I'd lay you off first too

This is one of those FMLS where part of it isn’t your fault & part is. While I’m sorry for the sudden job loss & that’s unfortunate, you shouldn’t be out here living like there’s no tomorrow in such an economy and with the real threat of such a possibility of life events, like an emergency, a disaster, or in this case, a layoff. As a young adult / adult, you should have been preparing for these things. Don’t live above your means & then complain when life gets in the way.
