Today, I was feeling down following a recent breakup. My dad tried to comfort me by patting me on the back and saying everyone goes through ups and downs, "Like when I found out your mum and I were having a boy." I'm their only son. FML

Today, after being dumped by my boyfriend of two years, I poured my heart out to my dad. He nodded and looked sympathetic throughout. Afterwards, I asked him what I should do. He replied, "How the hell should I know?" and awkwardly left my room. FML
Today, I confided to my dad that since the recent breakup with my boyfriend of 3 months, I feel down all the time and life doesn't feel worth living anymore. His loving advice was for me to "grow the fuck up and get your sentimental head out of la-la land." FML
Today, I came home crying after my boyfriend dumped me for another girl. My dad told me to come tell him what was wrong. I sat down and let it all out, after which he looked up from his book, into my eyes, and gave me his loving advice: "Just cry about it and move on to another bastard." FML
Today, I told my mom about the rough time I'm having over my recent break-up, and how I can't help thinking about my ex every single day. Her attempt to console me involved saying, "Pft. I bet he doesn't think about you every day" and walking away. Thanks. FML
Today, my boyfriend broke up with me. I came back home in tears, and eventually told my dad what was wrong. He immediately excused himself to the living room, where I heard him tell my mum, "She's gone all Taylor Swift again." FML
Today, I found my dad drunk, sitting on the bathroom floor crying. When I asked him why, he said, "My son is gay." I'm his only child, and I'm a girl. FML
Today, I got back home from work and casually asked my dad, "What's up?" He casually replied, "Wishing I'd had a son instead." and stared glassy-eyed at me until I left the room. FML
Today, I was sitting in my room when my dad walked in to talk. He said I'm not the son he'd hoped for, and that he'd been let down as a father. He said I should change the way I am so that he could love me more. It was the longest conversation I've had with my dad in years. FML
Today, days after I broke up with my girlfriend, my dad tried to make her feel better by inviting her to our family BBQ next weekend. FML
Today, I got a text from my mom that said, "Your dad and I are so proud of you." Sweet, right? It was meant for my brother. FML

It was a JOKE, and OP wasn't ready to laugh yet. If his parents were that cruel they wouldn't be trying to make him feel better in the first place. Laughter can be the best medicine.

1, I can see OP's dad was probably cracking a joke but OP didn't was too depressed. My parents used to tell me, and still sometimes do, that I should feel special because I was their only planned child. I have 2 older and 1 younger sisters. I never wanted to hear that and still don't.

Or, perhaps.. OP's dad is really just unintelligent, and only knew how to cheer his kid up the way he knew.. And couldn't think of something more enlightening.. And doesn't realize the effect it has on his poor son. (Sounds like a lot of inconsiderate parents I know, ever realize how many ******* stupid people you talk to, in just a day?!) I feel Op would be smart enough, in this day and age, to tell the difference between a good humoured father, and what dismissive is.

I'm sure he's just fooling. But I have heard of a lot of a parents (especially dads) that cross their fingers and hope for boys vs girl (because of what troubles they fear).
