Either that's one long tampon string, your shorts are short enough for the string to hang out and therefore too short to be work appropriate, or that tampon was no longer doing its job.

Cherish that colleague. Every woman is bound to experiment an embarrassment due to menstrution at least once in her life. Don't worry about it.
