Today, it’s been two weeks since I’ve been in Hungary. I make the most of being away from home by dieting, eating for lunch every day a pot of really nice yoghurt with fresh fruit. I learned this morning that “Tejfol” doesn’t mean “yoghurt”, but “cream”. FML

I don't understand how you couldn't taste the difference? They both have pretty distinguishable flavours.. And textures, even.. Hmm..

That's terrible advice. Assuming it's straight heavy cream (unlikely, because I'm not sure how OP could confuse a liquid for yogurt), it's densely caloric as is. Also, there's likely added sugar to make it palatable. Fruit, while high in sugar, has a lot of fiber, which attenuates blood sugar spikes and insulin production. Plain Greek yogurt and fresh fruit would be a decent choice, since it's high in protein and fiber, and low in added sugar.

Oh, you could've just ask someone in the supermarket, Hungarian people are usually very helpful :) Yes in English it's sour cream but I suppose it's completely different from the US ones. There are different types for those who are on diet, so you can choose a low fat version if you buy and I agree with the sugar thing. Sour cream is part of the Hungarian cuisine and is very healthy. :) (yoghurt is joghurt in Hungarian btw)

I can speak from experience that if you really want to diet try to minimize the sodium and sugars. Inside three weeks with almost no exercise I lost 21 pounds.

The sodium reduction is really only helpful if your struggle with water retention; while cutting sodium is definitely a good thing, and can help you lose water weight, I'm banking on the sugar being the more important factor.

A diet? I guess that makes you hungry in Hungary

Even if it was yogurt, it doesn't seem like a healthy way to diet. You need proper varied meals, albeit lean ones.

Okay, just to say it because otherwise I'll wind up saying the same thing to a hundred different people, apparently, and will wind up more worried about people than I already am, here's a bit of a rant: Dieting by JUST "counting calories" or JUST "not eating carbs" or JUST "minimizing X and Y" IS NOT HEALTHY IN THE LONG RUN. Losing weight without any form of exercise is even worse because you WILL lose muscle tone and weight doing that. Before you even start a 'diet,' you need to figure out what your starting vitals and blood statistics like cholesterol, vitamins, and minerals are. Because if you have something that is low, and you cut back your general food intake you can not only make yourself very sick, but possibly cause permanent injury or even death to yourself. You need to know if you have any physical problems for the same reason- plus, if you do have health issues they can slow or even prevent weight loss. Plus, your doctor NEEDS to know what your starting statistics are so that they can stop you and tell you if you are being too aggressive in your weight loss and it is impacting your health. You ESPECIALLY need to make sure you don't have heart problems that you didn't know about- it's unfortunately common for people to decide to "be healthy" and jump into an exercise routine that's a over their level and causes them to have a heart attack because of a heart condition they didn't even know they had. If you want to lose weight, or even just improve your health, changing your lifestyle is inherently superior to doing diets, because once you stop a diet, your weight WILL go back up- and yoyo-ing your weight can cause heart problems, amongst other health issues- but when you change your way of living to be healthier, the weight tends to stay off and the benefits tend to stick around because you aren't doing what caused the weight and health issues to begin with. Lifestyle changes are also easier on your mental and emotional state- yes, there's some initial upheaval while you adapt, but once you do the changes become habit instead of being a thing you have to constantly consciously think of like a diet. Maybe I'm overreacting a little, but it worries the hell out of me when people endanger their health trying to improve it because they got some well meaning but hazardous advice. Your health is a precious thing- please don't endanger it by jumping from diet to diet or by diet if without exercising; it could take you years to recover from the damage caused by a few weeks, if recovery is even possible.

I feel you on this. I know I'm over-commenting, but as a biomedical scientist working on her personal training certification with added focus on nutrition, it scares me to see so many people sharing horrible advice.

To the one saying fat doesn't make you fat but sugar does. A gram of fat is equal to two grams of sugar or proteins in terms of energy/kcal (yes, proteins makes you just as "fat" as sugar). Stop reading some stupid magazines with "miracle diets" and learn it's all about calorie consumption compared to how many calories you burn.

actually proteins are different because your body can't store it.

OP I wonder how you didn't notice the difference, can't you taste it's not yoghurt?

The "cream" is apparently closer to sour cream. Thicker yogurts like Greek yoghurt are also somewhat tart, much like sour cream is. In fact, in the culinary realm it's popular to substitute sour cream for Greek yogurt and vice versa, for either health reasons or not having one called for in a recipe on hand but having the other. The two of them are even made using similar processes. Of course, people are either ignorant of the fact that somebody has already said that it was a dish closer to sour cream, or a willfully ignoring it in order to mock OP for being unable to differentiate between liquid cream and solid yoghurt. Nevermind that the cream in this case is sour cream, thus a solid, and also one with similar coloration and texture to yogurt to boot.

That's double ydi. First one for being dumb enough to not being to tell cream from yougurt. Second for being dumb enough to think yogurt and fruits is dieting

According to google, tejföl is sour cream.
