Today, I was volunteering at an Indian hospital through a Canadian volunteer agency after paying $3000. It was my first day, but I got deported for having an incorrect visa. I had a tourist visa when I was supposed to have a "miscellaneous" visa. I got deported for volunteering. FML

Did you, or the agency, check this beforehand? After all, as a volunteer, you're not a tourist...

I'm going with YDI, I've always had to give details about my trip when I apply for a visa. More than once I was reminded that I can't work on tourist visa. The applications also say it.

Many countries separate volunteering from tourism in their visa regimes. YDI for not doing your homework. Your intent is irrelevant.

You paid 3000 bucks to work for free? Pardon my ignorance but what is the purpose of that?

I mean apart from the general advice to always double check yourself - take this up with the agency. What have they been doing with your money if they can't even get you the correct visa for it?
