Today, I was at a party and saw an old friend from college. I went up to her asking how she was and how her family was. She went on to tell me that her husband left her a month ago and started crying. I told her that he was an ass anyway and that she didn't need him. Turns out he died. FML

Today, I was having coffee with an old friend I hadn't seen since university. I asked about her husband; she replied, "He died" and walked off. I was confused, so I stood up and took off after her. She then reminded me that I was at his funeral, and then slapped me in the face. FML
Today, I was speaking to an old friend and I asked her how her mother was. She replied, "She passed away, you came to her funeral last month." FML
Today, I ran into an old friend of mine at the store. All was going fine, until she showed me her new fiancé. My now ex-boyfriend. FML
Today, at work, I asked a lady how she was doing. When she replied, I didn't understand her, and instead of asking her what she'd said, I just replied with, "Oh, that's good." What she'd said that I didn't understand was that her husband had just died. FML
Today, I finally found out what happened to my ex-girlfriend from my high school days, since a few years ago she suddenly stopped using social media and never returned my texts or calls to see how she was doing. Turns out she died, and no one bothered to inform me. FML
Today, I thought my coworker had confided to me that a close friend had died too soon, but it turns out she'd just ruined an expensive pan. We talked for 10 minutes and she cried. FML
Today, I ran into an old friend, and she asked me how I was doing. I replied, "Still alive!" like I always do. I forgot both of her parents recently passed away. FML
Today, a man I once worked with passed away. He was a lovely, caring, and inspirational person whom I looked up to. My husband's form of consolation? "Old people die. Get over it." FML
Today, my wife of 18 years and I went to a party. We arrived and left separately, and didn't even talk to one another while there. I miss her. FML
Today, my sister asked me how my boyfriend was doing. He died two years ago. She was the first person I told. FML

Definitely a FML. Assuming "my husband left me" means a separation/divorce is pretty reasonable, it's what most people say in that situation. I've never heard anyone using that phrasing to describe the death of their partner. If somebody told me that their partner had left them, I'd automatically make the same assumption - as I think 95% of people would.

Who the hell refers to a spouse's death as them "having left him/her"? She brought it on herself for saying it like that.

I didn't know not wanting to be with somebody anymore makes you an ass. I know you were saying that to make her feel better, but I personally would not have lied to her like that.

To all those saying that the friend brought it on themselves: many people in grief try to ease the pain by avoiding the idea of death. She was probably doing the same thing by saying he left. OP, you should never assume anything when dealing with a delicate subject like that. YDI

Unless she said it in a different way like he's no longer with us or something and OP just paraphrased she's an idiot but I guess she's too upset to think properly. I'm sure if you explain she'll understand.
