Today, I received a letter in the mail stating that I had won a trip to Cancun, Mexico. It looked like a scam so I threw it away. I later found out that it was a birthday present from my cousin and the envelope also contained a check for 5 thousand dollars to help cover some expenses. FML

I went to Cancun about 10 days ago. Really pretty place. Too bad you won't see it. Unless you dig it out of the trash.

Your cousin shouldn't have made it look like junk mail.

The good thing about checks is that they're *replaceable*.

It's nice that you're being cautious, but checking the return address might've helped...

Better safe then sorry? that sucks, FYL cuz i woulda thought it was a scam 2. but ya u should check the return address in the future - its usually helpful

well if you opened it today and threw it away today it somewhere in your trash..............lol have fun with that

ydi for not double checking to make sure

I think this is your cousin's cheap way out to NOT get you a birthday gift ! "what? you threw away your FREE TRIP envelope? I sent you that, I swear"

You could've at least double-checked. YDI.

That's why I examine all my mail a bit more closely, even if they appear to be scams.

At least it was a check and not cash.

yeah, if it was just a check then there's really no problem, they could just write you a new one. did they send you the actual tickets or just a letter saying you won or whatever? i doubt they'd send tickets to that type of thing through the regular mail, it's not safe enough if something happened. this could turn out to be not an FML at all, just a funny story that ends with you going to cancun.
