Go to HR, tell them what happened, and specify that you don’t want to risk this turning into a hostile work environment. HR’s job is primarily to protect the company’s interests and not the employees’, but sometimes you can convince them that your goals align.
Stay out of it, but report it to HR. Don’t tell anyone what you saw or heard either. Say what you saw and heard only to the person doing the investigation. I’ve been there, and I know it’s sucks, especially if you are friends with both involved
